Protecting lampposts from dogs

Some years ago I read about a simple solution to the expensive problem to which the article in The Press refers (Dogs are blamed for toppling lampposts, March 16).

A hinged metal collar, about a foot high, fitted round the base of the post would protect it from corrosive substances and would cost a good deal less to replace than the £1,000 the article quotes.
