York Crown Court flagpole

Mark Stead (Court flagpoles reprieved, The Press, March 13) quite correctly drew our attention to the new flagpole outside the York Crown Court.

However, he was quite wrong in saying that the Union Flag could now be flown. The law is not the same over the Union and the correct flag to be flown over a courthouse in England is that of St George. Show me a single courthouse or local council building in Scotland that flies the Union Flag. The same is true of the Church of England, which can only fly the St George’s flag, as it is not present in other parts of the Union.

Brian Gant, Slessor Road, Acomb, York.

Does York have an official Vexilologist? If not, I propose Mr Grant!

What union? They are all leaving but us. We will have to be satisfied with the EU.
