Living outside constituency boundary

MADELINE Kirk, the Liberal Democrat prospective candidate for Outer York, in all her election literature makes great play of the fact that the Conservative candidate, Julian Sturdy, lives outside the constituency boundary (although only by a mile or so and he is nearer to some parts of the constituency than she is).

No doubt she would direct her criticism in the same way to her fellow candidate, Anna Arrowsmith, the Liberal Democrat candidate for Gravesham in Kent, who also lives outside that constituency as she resides in Tunbridge Wells.

Paul Vernon, Deans Close, Bishopthorpe, York.

Yes - it's classsic Lib-Dem double standards with Madeline. Christian Vassie does not live in York Central, yet he is the Lib-Dem parliamentry candidate. Also, I wonder who gave Tom Holvey directions to Selby where he is standing.

Yes Mrs Kirk who has lived and worked in York for almost 30years but who has also stood in East Leeds (1997) and Elmet (2001 & 2007). Double standards indeed .

All the candidates in York Outer are rubbish and, like most people in the constituency, I won't be bothering to give them a mandate on election day.

Lot of froth about nothing really, although it's clearly got the Tories rattled to get a stooge to write in. What about their policies?

What we should be concentrating on is that Mr Sturdy is the recipient of Lord Ashcrofts offshore money to try and buy the seat. Judging by the amount of literature that has been posted to me by the Tories money is no object - which is something to which I strongly object !

Love 'em or hate them the Lib Dems at least have pushed stuff through my door themselves and canvassed my street. I'm a traditional Labour voter but am wrestling with tactical voting to stop the constituency result being bought by a disingenuous millionaire.

As for York Central, much as it goes against the grain to say it Vassie is the only local candidate. Wade Weeks is from Chichester and Bayley names his first home as London which really gets my goat - so he can claim £1200 a month on his York home. Shame on you Hugh - you bring disgrace on the Labour Party with your money grabbing. Far from being deterred by the bad publicity - his claims are up nearly 10% this year.

Voters in the York Outer constituency are in a real quandary.
I know all the three main contenders, and the "likeliest" candidate i.e. the most likely to serve ALL the people is James Alexander.
He may be young but he seems to understand that representing Outer York is not just how many times you can get your photograph into your publicity material , or repeat the mantras of Conservative Central Office .
This is a National election and the other candidates have little to say about the real problems facing Britain.
James has accumulated a wealth of experience in his short working life, and he appreciates the problems of the elderly as well as those of students and the young. He might not get in but is definitely the best candidate.

Problem is that James has NO CHANCE of winning in this Tory-Lib Dem marginal and I would hate for Ashcroft to buy Mr Sturdy the seat so I will be tactically voting for Madeleine Kirk.

Not that impressed with Mr Alexander though, lacks any gravitas and seems a master of getting into The Press more regularly than anyone else and sometimes on the most flimsy of pretences. Each to their own though...

Another problem with lots of Madeline Kirks Liberal Democrat leaflets for the long time coming general election is not just that sometimes a bar graph predicting a close result has more prominence than party policies.

It states the result is for York, so she must not be aware she is standing in York Outer, a new 'doughnut' constituency made up from three previous ones all at which the Lib Dems came a weak third.

Also I thought it was a legal requirement to state the polling organisation, date and sample size.

Maybe it is their old trick of calculating the result based on previous council elections, but probably not as last time they did not fare to well including them losing a councilor even in Madeline’s own council ward.

I have as yet received no literature and don't really want any as I judge how I have seen the various contenders perform both locally and nationally.

Not one of them deserves my vote, yet I feel that as my vote is important to me I have to use it to the best of my ability.
I will use it,but hope whoever gets it won't take it for granted.
Notice I don't attempt a party line.

In response to RHSmyth's confusion - the bar charts are based on 2005 Election results and the votes redistributed in the new seat. Based on this the website below puts the Lib Dems in a better position than their leaflets !!
