WE HAVE read with interest and appreciation all the tributes to our dear friend Jack Archer.

They have reminded us of his great commitment, compassion and determination in the work of improving the well-being of his community. One area of his life, however, has not been mentioned and I would appreciate the opportunity to fill that gap. Jack was a friend and governor of Poppleton Road Primary School for many decades.

He was a neighbour, living just across the road from school, and very involved with every aspect of our school life. He served on our governing body continually – for many years as chair – giving us the benefit of his knowledge and experience. He was interested in every activity of the school, our staff and our children.

Nothing was unimportant to Jack: he supported us in all our projects, attending class and school assemblies, Christmas performances and Year Six pantomimes. Jack was gentle and quiet, but astute and pragmatic. His advice was rooted in common sense and his long experience of what could be done and how it might be achieved. Most of all, Jack was a friend who loved us – and so he gave us his time and his attention. A familiar figure in the school corridors, popping in to visit “his” class, it is difficult to realise he won’t be in any more. We will so miss him.
