Cost of television licence

Once again there has been an increase in the cost of a television licence, which when added to “pay to view” channels is threatening to make TVs a luxury item for many to have in their homes.

No doubt some will look to the radio as an alternative for entertainment and call it a day.

However, years ago, when television was only available to a few who could afford it, many used to invite friends round who did not have such an item.

If there was something special to watch people would go round to their neighbour’s, and both together would be viewing something in good company.

I wonder whether we will revert to doing this, calling in on a neighbour to watch their television or even helping with the cost of the licence if a regular visitor?

Could black-and-white televisions be reintroduced with this new digital technology for those who feel the licence fee for them is more acceptable? What is wrong with black-and-white anyway used as an alternative for viewing if it’s cheaper? Something may be better than nothing at all.

We went to watch the Coronation in 1953 on my aunt's !2 inch black and white TV. Her old lady next door neighbour was there too. When the start up screen came on she let out a gasp of amazement and shouted, "Isn't it lovely!"

The licence fee should be scrapped as it is only another tax. On another similar theme, what is wrong with scrapping the road fund licence and adding the same amount to fuel costs, the more fuel used the more tax paid and it would not be possible to avoid paying.

As for putting the tax on fuel, I'm afraid to say you have already been had.
You see @ around 80%, the tax is already on the fuel so VED is a nice little (Or big) earner.
Our fuel is already more expensive than European countries where the tax is built in and I bet their roads are better too.
Don't forget the £61 per year green tax you pay on your gas & electricity.
Yes, the TV licence another tax so you pay for Government keeping quiet on the truth of the Global Warming hoax & putting out propaganda. Act on CO2 rubbish, you the tax payer fund it...Nuff said!

Everyone has a right not to pay their TV licence. Its easy to do, switch your TV off, unplug it from the wall and give it away or take it to the tip.

I got rid of mine 5 years ago and haven't looked back. I used to spend hours watching the thing and never got anything useful done.

I always complained that there was never anything on TV anyway.
