Congestion charge arguments

THERE are arguments for and against congestion charging in York, but let nobody be misled on two points.

First, in my experience from visiting central London it is usually jammed up much as before. In other words those not exempt now pay for the right to sit in queues.

Secondly, Coun Merrett rather let the cat out of the bag some weeks ago on BBC Look North. His only comment was that City of York Council needs money to solve “traffic problems”, or some such phrase. In other words, the aim is not to reduce congestion but to exploit it to fill the council’s coffers, and also for the profit of any company engaged to run the scheme.
