Plight of mothers around the world

I AM sure most of us in York are rushing to get cards, flowers or chocolates to show our mothers just how important they are to us as we mark Mother’s Day.

Some women aren’t so lucky, however, and tragically in many countries around the world women die as a result of complications related to pregnancy.

Perhaps even more devastating, many of these deaths could have been prevented.

As well as to our mothers, or to the mothers of our children, we at Amnesty York will send cards to Prime Minister Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Nick Clegg.

The message to them will be somewhat different, as we are asking them to ensure that their election commitments will include an assurance to improving health systems within developing countries to ensure that maternal health is a basic right to which no mother-to-be should be denied.

If you would like to send them a card or find out more visit amnesty.org.uk/mums

All mothers deserve to know that they are important – every day not just Mother’s Day.

Jill Pratt, Amnesty York, Margaret Street, York.

Couldn't we all just spoil our own mums for one day without you politicising it and making us all feel guilty?
