A ‘very sad’ end to Nestle factory

I thought readers would be interested to see a view of what’s happened to our Nestlé factory.

It is very sad and I feel something could have been done for all the buildings on site.

They were all fine, well-built buildings. Nestlé Rowntree is part of our history, our heritage and should be preserved.

Robert Greaves, Alder Way, New Earswick, York.

Neither Suchards or Nestle should have been allowed to bid for Rowntrees. Our companies are not allowed the same in Switzerland. Same also for American compainies like Kraft that have acquired Terry's and Cadbury's. I don't like the way that Yanks do business. There's no spirit of co-operation. They turn up with their lawyers to fleece you. Both are 'whore' nations.

True, they buy the valuable 'brands' and have a load of factories and workers thrown in that the didn't really want.
We do need more protection for our prosperous industries. Buyers should sign up for keeping them in Britain and never move them abroad without massive financial penalties.

To be fair to Robert it is a crying shame that these buildings, at least the outer shells could not be preserved as they are a big part of York's history and skyline.
York Council are as much to blame for allowing this destruction.
However, to be fair to Nestle, they have put a lot of investment into York and most products I believe are still produced on the site that were produced before the 1988. take over.
