Right decision was reached on Terry’s

AS a member of the comments forum formed by Grantside and a Freeman of York, I was delighted at the outcome of the application meeting last Wednesday evening, which I attended sitting in the public gallery.

It was a long meeting, but I listened with interest to all the points for and against and felt the right decisions were eventually made.

We were made well aware that there are still several factors to be resolved as the development progresses and felt that this was a very sensible action for the council to take.

As a local resident, a member of St Chad’s Church PCC and a governor of Knavesmire School, I look forward to watching the site develop and feel sure the local community and the city of York will benefit from all the amenities it will bring.

• After about two years rethinking, the ambitious development plan for the Terry’s site has been accepted by City of York Council. Presumably, the previous concerns voiced by the various interested parties have been provided for.

The Press reports (Terry’s fury, February 6) that, 48 hours before the crucial meeting, the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment decided to say that the proposals “had not been translated into a convincing master-plan”, design issues needed further consideration and: “We think the application should not be permitted in its current form.”

Is this late observation really necessary, and should anyone listen to this quango or any other similar organisation/commission which may be preparing to expound its belated, unsupportive views?

The Grantside developer has spent two years patiently attempting to placate similar concerns of the council planners.

There have been plenty of situations, when these views from the sideline, have contributed to delays, leading the abandonment of laudable plans for improving this city’s environment in several areas, including housing and employment opportunities for the many.

The council vote was yes – go for it.
