Pavements are for pedestrians

I have just read the letter written by Mrs A Knowles (Just watch out, February 5).

Although I have every sympathy with the less mobile members of our society, I have to point out that the footpaths are exactly that. They are primarily for pedestrians.

The onus is on the person using wheels, be it a pushchair or a scooter or bike, to watch out for pedestrians. I am fully in favour of adequate training to be given to all people wishing to use mobility vehicles, as I have been hit on the back of my legs on more than one occasion by over-zealous riders.

Mrs J Martin, Queenswood Grove, York.

• I have had to rouse myself from my apathetic state to answer the recent letter in The Press regarding mobility chariots (I’m sure they have knives sticking out of the wheels). Last year I was standing outside Sainsbury’s Foss Bank, minding my own business, waiting for my taxi to take me and my shopping home when – bang!

I was hit from behind and sent spinning like Wonder Woman. By the time I had stopped spinning she had disappeared.

Hit and run by a mobility chariot! My friends loved that when I told them.

I am a big lass, so she must surely need an eyesight test. I suffered a twisted knee, and and in fact it is still painful after all these months.

Watch where I am going? I was standing still.

Christine Elliott, Layerthorpe, York.

Try visiting Doncaster. These bl00dy things seem to be a fashion-accessory down there. They even do 'his & her' matched pairs.
