20mph speed limit

I’m pleased to see recent publicity around the possible introduction of a 20mph speed limit in residential areas in the city.

Labour was the first party to call for this initiative across the whole city, rather than on a street-by-street basis, having adopted the policy more than two years ago. The evidence is compelling when it comes to casualty and injury reduction, as comprehensive studies in London and elsewhere have shown.

While we support speed reduction in some places rather than nowhere, taking an ad-hoc approach to speed reduction on a street-by-street basis is not helpful in letting drivers know how they should be driving. A city-wide limit would avoid this problem and create a safer city for people to live and work in. And, despite what some people say, would not create huge inconvenience to drivers.

Labour’s commitment to a 20mph city will be discussed at a public meeting on Thursday, when we welcome national “20s Plenty” campaign director Rod King to York. The meeting begins at 5.30pm at the Guildhall and all are welcome.
