The news of potential cuts in City of York Council’s Arts and Culture service is very disappointing.
Having worked with Arts Action, I know that Gill Cooper’s team are very committed to working hard for the benefit of York’s population, in particular young people.
The move is a sad indication of the wider council’s poor track record in developing local culture.
In 2009, the council withdrew support for the York Literature Festival and dropped the Read Write York project (and its website) without any consultation with users or the public.
Christian Vassie, a councillor with good ideas for local arts provision, was shamefully pushed out of his position. The Barbican debacle has also left a bad taste in many people’s mouths, and the council rejected plans to host an exciting Radio 1 gig at the racecourse.
York should be dynamic and ambitious, punching above its weight on the national arts and culture scene. Instead, it’s considering cutting jobs in that area. Our city deserves better. Miles Salter Chairman, York Literature Festival Voluntary Group, Heworth, York.
