I read Pauline McSweeney’s letter with great interest (British veal better for dairy calves, October 22).
Two things I have never ordered or eaten are pate du foie gras and veal, because I am sickened at the way these two are produced.
Perhaps, if British calves could live a better life, and their meat was sold in this country, I should start to perhaps change my eating habits in respect of the veal, at least.
I wish that someone could find a way to determine that cows can give birth only to female calves, so at least these little creatures will be allowed to live, although their lives will be uncomfortable, as the lives of all farm animals have to be in order to feed the only species of any importance on the planet, human beings.
I won’t start on that tack here, as my views are unprintable.
However, I will look out for the “British meat” sign on packs of veal and may purchase some.
Thank you, Pauline, for your letter on this important and tragic subject.
