I WAS saddened to see that the former Fever Hospital of 1881 in Huntington Road has been reduced to a heap of rubble. One of York’s most unusual buildings it is described in John Hutchinson’s City Guide as “a funny, happy building with cast-iron verandas and a clock tower”. Without a local list, which would have included a building such as this of both architectural and historic interest, casual vandalism of this nature will continue to happen without any public awareness or consultation. The city should take steps to take care of all its hidden treasures and not concentrate solely on creating spurious so called ‘cultural quarters’.
