Ban all snares

I WAS upset, but not surprised, to read about Holly the cat who was killed in a snare last week (Cat killed by illegal animal snare, The Press, August 29).

Sadly, this is not an isolated case. We are regularly contacted by distressed pet owners whose animals have suffered in snares.

Many people will be shocked to learn that snares are still legal in the UK, although they are already outlawed in much of Europe.

These thin, wire nooses are totally indiscriminate and pose a threat to any animal which happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Cats, dogs and livestock, as well as protected animals such as badgers and otters, have been known to suffer horrendous injuries or even be killed by these lethal devices.

The League Against Cruel Sports is calling for an end to this unnecessary suffering and campaigning for a complete ban on all snares. To find out more visit www.league.org.uk/snaring Cerys Roberts, Snaring campaigner, League Against Cruel Sports, Union Street, London.
