SO, our gallant football team return home as heroes from Russia.

I think we’d have settled for a semi-final slot before the competition kicked off. But let’s put England’s run into perspective.

We advanced from an easy group, past Columbia and Sweden, hardly world powers of the beautiful game. And I know the old adage you can only play what’s in front of you.

However Gareth Southgate instilled a belief and somehow managed to rid us of the fear factor, ultimately there was no Plan B when the going got tough.

Why is it in this country we always applaud the gallant loser as hero/heroes, lauded as high achievers, remember Henry Cooper, Tim Henman and to a certain extent Frank Bruno (bless him)?

1966 and all that still remains a millstone around British football’s neck.

Acomb library is an exception to the rule

IN many parts of England libraries are struggling. Not so in Acomb, York.

The branch there of Explore libraries is busy every day of the week.

It has really good, polite, helpful staff, many are volunteers, and all offer advice willingly. They are especially good with computers.

Saturdays are extremely good for children with puzzles, hide and seek games, Lego building, music of various kinds, a play area, outside facilities, a plant sale, indoor games for the elderly and handicapped.

The police often have a stand and there is always a big range of books, newspapers, council advice, and DVDs etc that can be borrowed. Printing and photocopying is easy and not expensive.

Being a member is a really beneficial thing to do and support. Long may this excellent library continue.
