Recently in The Press Police and Crime Commissioner Julia Mulligan complained that North Yorkshire Police had lost a considerable amount of money in trying to catch speeding motorists with their latest expensive acquired equipment, namely camera vans.

The reason for this - and I’m sure she doesn’t need anyone to tell her - is that the police must inform the general public where and when they will be operating their camera vans. Usually a notice appears in the press.

I stand corrected on this matter and no doubt Christian Vassie will take pleasure in informing me that I am wrong but I am fairly certain it is a directive from Mr Vassie’s beloved EU that it is law that the police must inform everyone of their intentions.

On the road where I live, cars speed every day and when the police camera van is operating all the motorists comply with the law but the following day there are the usual culprits breaking the law, usually every day between 8am and 9.15am and 4.15pm and 6pm.
