WELL, well, well, who’d have thought it?All these years I had the impression that democracy was all about one person, one vote, the will of the people etc. But no, it appears that route only leads to autocracy and dictatorship.

Real democracy, according to Maurice Vassie (Letters, May 14) is being told what to do by a collection of has-beens desperately clinging to some semblance of power and control.

That being the case, why bother with elections at all? They’re only disruptive and divisive. Just point a sharp stick long enough to wake Their Lordships from their slumber and they’ll pick MPs and councillors a bit like we used to pick football teams in the playground.

I eagerly await Monsieur Vassie’s next diktat - maybe the return of the divine right of kings?

Common sense view on UK immigration

SO Christian Vassie has once again “twisted” his letter re us Brexiteers (The Press, May 1). It is sad that there is a downside to the referendum that there has been an increase in verbal and physical attacks on immigrants. Generally though I think Britain is more tolerant than some European countries who did not have a Commonwealth where people recognise the importance that these people played in helping to build this country.

Mr Vassie implies that us Brexiteers think that if people talk funny they should be asked to go home. Well, my dentists talk funny but I certainly don’t want them to go home. It is difficult enough to get an appointment.

Some immigrants don’t necessarily see eye to eye. Many are of different nationalities and cultures living in the same street and area.

I think that immigration in this country on the whole has been quite good, but there is obviously still a lot of work to be done and, as I keep saying Mr Vassie, immigration has to be controlled. That is common sense.

All our MPs would win Mastermind

THERE are few of the Members of Parliament who strut down Westminster way like peacocks that I can think of who who would fail to win Mastermind of Great Britain (speciality subject: pulling the wool over people’s eyes).
