FORGET pottery classes and exercising to music. Residents of St John’s House nursing home in Kirk Hammerton had something much more fun to look forward to - a visit by the troopers of A (Yorkshire) Squadron based in York. The troopers even brought along an armoured vehicle, complete with machine gun.

The visit was to say thank you to residents for the letters and parcels they posted to members of A Squadron during their recent tour of Poland. Trooper Stephen Dixon said theyhe and his comrades missed the home comforts while serving overseas. “So we’re really grateful to the residents of St John’s House for taking the time to think of us,” he said.

Quite right too. But what a lovely gesture to make in return.
