TOD BRADBURY, Animal Aid campaign manager, asks if we can rise to the vegan challenge (Letters, October 6).
Why should we?
I queried in my previous letter what would we do with the land? Put it down to housing and roads?
On a recent five-day outing to Buxton, I noticed the land there is “dog and stick” land. Totally unsuitable for any other use.
We saw field upon field full of some of the best cows with calves at foot. Superb.
Flocks of sheep of every conceivable breed.
Magnificent dairy herds, a joy to observe.
None of the animals would have been born otherwise.
What are farmers and rural communities to do? Farming’s difficult enough as it is.
Would it be kinder to animals or the environment not to breed them?
If people want to eat meat and drink milk - cow, goat or otherwise - that is their choice.
Vegetarians and vegans have their choice. It is up to each individual to do likewise.
Live and let live.
