THERE have been several coalition governments throughout our long history, the most recent being between the Conservatives and Lib Dems from 2010 to 2015.

This was the first coalition government since the Second World War and was brought about because the Conservatives didn’t have a clear majority, so the Lib Dems joined forces to enable the Conservatives to enter power. That coalition was simply for political purposes.

The Second World War coalition, led by the best PM for the job (Winston Churchill), was to unite the best politicians from all parties to fight Nazi Germany when Britain stood alone.

Britain is now in a stand alone situation in the fight to leave the EU.

In the Second World War, Nazi Germany tried to cripple us with bombs.

The EU are attempting to achieve “crippling” by demanding exorbitant amounts of money from us.

So, in this somewhat fraught situation, would it not make good sense to have a Second World War-type coalition bringing the best political brains to the fore in order to get the most advantageous deal for us before leaving the EU?

Among current politicians do we have people who could come together under that type of coalition?

Judging from the constant back-biting we read about, it wouldn’t appear so.
