FOLLOWING Mr Bell’s response to my comments on the recent student excesses, I’d like to set the record straight on a few issues (Letters, October 14).

I totally agree sir, not all students are alike, hence my opening line clearly referred to “some” students.

We see the same type of activity most weekends from the hen and stag parties that plague the city after dark too and so, yes Mr Bell, I would happily make similar comments regarding these groups too, they ought to be shamed as well.

However, hen parties do at least alert people to their navigational incompetence by strapping L plates to their backsides and carry inflatable dolls that could act as an airbag.

Secondly I think these groups go beyond “irritating” and pose a real danger to life and as such they need to be addressed.

I trust the responsible students will recognise that I’m not referring to them, indeed its likely a fellow student reported this disgrace to the press/university and all credit to them for doing so.

But the world has changed and on discipline I fear not for the better, resulting in the increased frequency of such incidents as I’m sure many residents in heavily student populated areas would attest to.

Finally if you can be sent to prison for wasting police time, why should the same not apply to the far more vital NHS?
