DR Scott Marmion rightly points out that the thorium cycle, which is an alternative to the uranium-based nuclear power currently in use, has an advantage: it cannot be used to make weapons (Letters, October 6).
The science has been known long enough, but the technology not developed. Why? Cynics would say that’s because it cannot be used to make weapons.
Poorer nations can’t be expected to fund development of thorium technology themselves because it’s cheaper to use existing uranium knowledge.
North Korea never made any peaceful pretences and would have gone down the uranium path anyway.
Iran? Developed and available thorium technology would have called its bluff.
