ONCE again we are witnessing the courts playing God with a leisure proposal for the city.

I refer of course to the Shakespeare theatre on the castle car park (Court bid to block theatre project, September 18). The courts are the one institution that actually contributes very little if anything to the visitor attractions, that element went out with the end of public executions.

James Cundell must be fed up to the teeth with their interference with his proposals to bring some quality of entertainment to the city.

Sadly, and probably more cheeky, is the objection from Historic England who wish for its relocation - I presume they are worried that it will detract from English Heritage’s proposal for the information centre at the base of the tower!

The Castle car park is an excellent ‘cash cow’ for the city council, and has been for many years with very little money being spent on its upkeep. Now they are to charge an extortionate sum to Lunchbox Theatrical Productions for it use, and into the bargain create more spaces at St Georges Field car park and Piccadilly to replace the ones lost at the Castle car park - cash cow indeed!

I hope the planners will for once stand up for the city, and oppose this objection.

On the other side of the coin the courts building would be an ideal extension to the Castle Museum!
