SEAN ATKINSON pointed out the problems our waterways have in that they are full of litter (Letters, September 11).

Any litter, including the millions of cigarette butts discarded daily, will eventually get washed into our waterways and then over time into our oceans.

There are many things we can do to solve this problem, such as joining in any locally-organised litter picks.

If there aren’t any local groups then maybe get together with your friends and set one up.

This is a growing problem as shown by the amount of litter collected on beach cleans up and down the Yorkshire coast. It is increasing year on year.

Our beaches and oceans are indicators of the accumulative problem of littering.

This weekend beach cleans are being held on various Yorkshire beaches from Saltburn down to Hull by the Marine Conservation Society.

Please check out their website for the one nearest to you and join us if you can.
