THANK goodness common sense has prevailed when it comes to the suggestion for the police and fire brigade to integrate.

The police and fire service have always respected each other’s roles, especially in dealing with incidents.

This is even though in 1919 when the Police Federation was formed the fire service declined to join in a united front and formed their own union.

Both serve their members during their service and after retirement and are committed to their rank and file, the only proviso being that the police are not allowed to go on strike.

They have their individual roles and the status quo should be maintained, and I speak from personal engagement with both services.
