SUE LISTER (Letters, August 11) is obviously too young to have lived through the Second World War and rationing.

Being an ardent vegan she poses the question: “Why is the thought of eating dogs and horses abhorrent in the UK but not elsewhere?”

Sorry Sue, but we did eat horsemeat. Whale meat and snoek were also consumed. We also kept rabbits for the table and not for pets.

The list of different “milks” Sue eulogises about poses several questions too.

I’ve had and thoroughly enjoyed coconut milk as there is quite a reservoir of this delicious milk in each nut.

Memories of being in Ceylon with the coconut men cutting open coconuts for us to drink from them came flooding back.

However, I didn’t realise there was milk in almonds, hazelnuts, flax (which I thought was used for linseed oil and for making into linen), hemp and quinoa (whatever that is).

Ms Lister says none of the above fake milks will contain “the thousands of pus cells of cows milk”.

The word pus conjures up fearful images of infected wounds which, of course, is the intention of the vegan brigade.

Quite probably people may try the vegan diet but it would not (for many reasons) be viable for most.
