NORTH Yorkshire County Council has slapped down the region’s Police and Crime Commissioner Julia Mulligan over her plans to take control of the county’s Fire Authority as well as its police service.

Mrs Mulligan has been campaigning for a new “governance model” which would see her heading up both emergency services. But the county council said yesterday it would not support the move.

The proposal is still being consulted on, but this looks like a body blow. We just hope that, given the shortage of resources for both services, Mrs Mulligan hasn’t wasted money on this futile attempt.
