THE intemperate re-iteration by David Armitage (Letters, July 22) of the constant claim of dedicated Brexiteers that a leave vote of 17 million is a mandate to embark on the hazardous exit route is no more than a smokescreen to obscure the incontrovertible fact that more than 29 million (62.5 per cent) of those eligible did not vote to leave.

Furthermore only England had a clear majority of votes to leave, and Scotland and Northern Ireland have major objections and problems over leaving.

On this basis there would appear to be an equally valid case for England to leave a (dis)United Kingdom.
