FOLLOWING the flood of letters concerning the proposed closure of the ticket office at York Station in its present form, I share a recent experience.

We are taking a short holiday in mid-Wales in September.

The single adult fare with a railcard shown on the National Rail website from York to Llandrindod is £55.75.

However, on visiting the staff at the station they were able to reduce that to £19.50 by spitting the tickets from York to Manchester, then Manchester to Shrewsbury, and finally Shrewsbury to Llandrindod. A saving of £36.25.

Since there are two of us travelling there and back, the total saving is £145.

Without the time and trouble taken by the excellent staff this saving would never have materialised.

Virgin Trains, think again and put customers before profit.
