THERE have been real concerns recently about a looming jobs crisis in York. Minster Law is moving 300 staff to Wakefield, CPP is moving part of its operation (and almost 50 jobs) to Leeds and 150 jobs are under threat at Nestlé. As many as 1500 civilian jobs would go, meanwhile, if Imphal and Strensall Barracks were to close as the Ministry of Defence wants.

It is good, therefore, to see York Central MP Rachael Maskell taking up the cudgels. She has secured a meeting with Business Secretary Greg Clarke to discuss the situation. Just what will come out of that meeting we don’t know. But it is right that concerns should be raised at the highest level.
