HERE we go again with the Green Party’s Denise Craghill and her proposal to shut Gillygate to general traffic (The Press, May 22).
We remember the terrible Labour council years when their man at the top, Cllr James Alexander, decided to close Lendal Bridge.
This action brought absolute chaos to central York and its outskirts as general traffic tried to find different routes to get to their destinations, and in the process creating pollution to those areas, Leeman Road being one of them as it was a way round the closure of the bridge.
Apart from the logistical mess this action created in unlawful fines along with the Coppergate fiasco, a positive came about. Cllr Alexander went to work with Ed Miliband in London.
