THERE will no doubt be plenty of grumbles at the prospect of Micklegate being closed to traffic this summer. It will be one-way only for two months, and for short periods both before and after that, the road will be closed to traffic altogether.
But the closures are essential to enable a much-needed restoration of historic Micklegate Bar, itself part of a £1.5 million project to preserve and protect York’s medieval city walls.
The closure of Micklegate will be a nuisance. But the work needs to be done. York’s walls are part of the city’s fortune - and far too important to neglect.
