FOR the benefit of The Press and the avid readers of my letters and, in the famous words of Max Bygraves, “I wanna tell you a story”.

In Yesterday Once More on May 22, there was a photograph of Hanover Street, Leeman Road, after the German air raid.

The partly demolished house on the left with the fireplace showing in the bedroom was the house I was in with my mother on the night of the raid.

I was six months old at the time.

When the raid started, my mother and I were sheltering under the kitchen table.

For some reason my mother thought better of it and took us to the air raid shelter at the bottom of the yard.

After the raid we came out to find that the house next door was completely demolished and our house partly.

The kitchen where we had originally been sheltering was non-existent.

My aunt came later and gathered what belongings we could find and took us to live with my grandparents in Lindley Street, Holgate.

Since that day I have lived in the Holgate area all of my 75 years and thank my lucky stars that my mother had second thoughts.
