The Castle car park in Tower Street must be one of the most popular car parks for residents, visitors, theatregoers, and visits to many other city centre attractions.

The surface of this car park has been allowed to deteriorate for several years to such an extent that it may be no longer fit for purpose.

Although I have no idea how much income is generated from parking fees at this facility, I would expect it to be a considerable amount that must justify worthy maintenance of the surface. Failure to carry out this work is a false economy and the council must act with a sense of responsibility by resurfacing and smartening up the area almost within the eye of York.

Can I suggest that if and when the work is carried out the parking bays are marked out to create enough space for the size of the modern vehicle and not for those of the sixties.

At the moment I find if you are fortunate to find a space, the next problem is to get out of your vehicle with insufficient room to open the driver’s door.

However I suspect that it may be the intention to redevelop the area in the future, denying the motorist the opportunity to park in the centre. This would be a dreadful mistake to the future economy of the city centre.
