I OBJECT to David Room’s plans for York station (Letters, May 1).
York station is an icon and should remain as it is a listed building. I’ve been to many wonderful railway stations but for atmosphere York is still the best.
And long may it stay.
Robert Greaves, Alder Way, New Earswick, York
YORK station ticket office might become yet another retail outlet. If this is so, can anyone stop this insanity? York has hundreds of fine shops, but only one ticket office. The erosion of useful facilities in the station began with the disappearance of the tourist information office and the reduction of seats in the platform three waiting room.
York station is a Grade II listed building, but is starting to resemble a shopping arcade. No way will this enhance the “travelling experience”.
Even if the friendly and knowledgeable ticket office staff, who often give faster and better ticket deals than machines and websites, are relocated within the station that would entail queuing twice when seeking detailed advice on journeys.
Where will this end? Adverts on the departure boards? Publicity jingles on the loudspeakers?
What happened to the quaint idea that railway stations are for passengers?
Richard Beaton, Long Ridge Lane, Upper Poppleton, York
