STEPHEN Lewis’ Yesterday Once More took me down memory lane (The Press, April 17).
I recognised the photograph of Elsie Cobb, the matron.
In 1949, myself and two friends held a small sale of our unwanted books and comics on a trestle table outside out front gate in Burton Stone Lane.
Our parents baked buns and scones for us and we raised £1 15 shillings for St Stephen’s Orphanage. We were 11 years old.
I still have the receipt and letter that Elsie Cobb gave to us.
Why I still have it, I don’t know. It is yellow with age.
Thank you for an interesting story of St Stephen’s and bringing back memories.
