PETER ROBERTS’ irritation with the use of “cote” in the Tour de Yorkshire puzzles me (Letters, May 2).
French is the first language of cycling, the audience is international and anyway it’s a bit of fun.
“Cote” in French means (among other things) hill, hillside, or bank.
So in that respect it’s spot on, except “Cote de Garrowby Hill” has hill in it twice, once in French and once in English, so would be better simplified to “Cote de Garrowby”.
Peter didn’t mention the one that did irritate me. Well, a tiny bit, anyway.
As anyone who knows the geography would tell you, “Cote de Robin Hoods Bay” would be the bank they went down between Hawsker and Bay Town.
On the way back up to the main A171 they climbed what I’d have called the “Cote de Fylingthorpe”.
