IN response to Maurice Vassie (Letters, April 27), I would like to clarify I’ve never been on a football terrace in my life.

As unpopular as it may be I detest football, but if I had to pick a sport that most closely resembled the cheating, bribery, corruption and dirty tricks of politics then football would be my first thought.

I asked readers: who do you think the EU would consider to be their meekest opponents?

It’s no secret the EU is determined to leave us British worse off outside the EU, including all those who voted remain. On those grounds the word opponents is indeed valid.

The leader of the “opposition” might choose another description that wasn’t so belligerent in its tone, but he does lack the gravitas to be considered a statesman.

It was true statesmen like Churchill that also used such patriotic rhetoric as “we shall fight them on the beaches”, not Harry Redknapp.

Finally, I am not and have never claimed to be a spokesman for York Conservatives.

The opinions I express in these letters are mine alone and you should not declare otherwise without evidence.

My vote is as fickle as the electorate of 1945; I will be voting for the candidate I think will best defend not just my interests but that of the nation as a whole.

I certainly won’t vote as Gina Miller’s alliance directs me to and sincerely hope the rest of the public will do likewise.
