DEMOCRACY is a word much beloved and used by our trade union fraternity.

The recent election of a new general secretary for a period of five years produced a truly democratic result.

A membership of just over one million managed a voting total of just 12.2 per cent – repeat 12.2 per cent.

The new secretary was elected by just 5.5 per cent, repeat 5.5 per cent of the members.

Wow. He is, of course, the outgoing Len McCluskey back to cause more industrial havoc and disruption for the next five years.

How can this be? - 87 per cent of the members couldn’t care less?

Further, our mighty press hardly mention this travesty and it passes with scarcely a comment.

I despair.
