CAN Dr Scott Marmion’s words on the EU (Letters, April 22) be seen as a true expression of the opinion of all York Conservatives?

They are the supporters of a party of urbane statesmen like Canning, Disraeli and Churchill.

Are we to understand that they are now likely to endorse the dismissive description of the diplomatic representatives of 27 neighbouring European nations as “the opponents” to be taken on by “the leader of team GB” who “must wear her nation’s colours with pride”.

Such an attitude and language is fitting for football terraces, but does not seem to square with the historic Tory approach to diplomacy and negotiations between statesmen on matters of common concern such as reciprocal human rights and human welfare.

Is that approach now consigned to the past?
