WITH all the turmoil of political events here and over the water in France, how wonderful to escape into another time and place through the magic of television.

Sunday nights are, again, being transformed by the wonderful ITV drama series The Durrells, which started last Sunday.

I was captivated with the first series that went on to receive well deserved acclaim - and I can’t believe that this second series will not achieve the same success.

I think many of us dream of the Durrell’s new start and simple family life in a pleasant foreign island when life was less rushed - and the fact it’s true makes it so endearing with the eclectic family members.

The dramas running on British television are simply outstanding and, for me, surpassing by far Hollywood offerings.

I think the famous sign is about to slide down the hill anytime now.

The monopoly they had with the exorbitant 35mm film costs have ended with the new digital cameras and HD televisions.

This year alone we have seen Line Of Duty (BBC), The Replacement (BBC) and Broadchurch (ITV), not to mention quality regulars like Grantchester and Vera. Last year The Night Manager, War And Peace, Victoria and Poldark.

This country now leads the world with talent in writing, cinematography, production and acting making programmes which play an important role in our export success.
