PERHAPS if City of York Council went back to naming their top earners by a title that described what they actually do (The Press, April 12), their inflated salary packages could return to more realistic levels.

The chief executive would be the “town clerk” and the corporate directors would be “section heads”.

Their usual excuse is that these people could earn their current pay and probably much more if they went to other authorities.

Fair enough, let them go and do this.

A salary of £50,000 would attract applicants who are ambitious and who would work their socks off as their chance came on the management ladder.
