THERE seems to be a resurgence of interest in reinstating the Parliament Street fountain.

I wonder if this is a good idea.

The dry fountain parapet has proved to be a popular seating place for resting and meeting people during a crowded day in town.

Surely this is more appreciated than the sight of water showering bystanders with all its inherent problems of maintenance, cleanliness and cost.

How about a pretty pergola or a long overdue statue of Joseph Rowntree surrounded by a colourful flower bed?
