RECENTLY we stayed with our son and his family in Amsterdam.
He is, of course, a British migrant/national, though fortunately has not been subjected to any of the racial abuse that some EU nationals have experienced in the UK.
The Dutch are a tolerant, pragmatic, forward-looking nation. They may have had an empire once, but they definitely have their feet in the 21st century.
While we were there, we visited the beautiful tulip fields. The flowers are auctioned daily to over 90 countries (that is the trade access you automatically have being in the EU single market).
Loss of trade with the UK will only cause them the smallest financial blip.
Unfortunately for us, flowers will be one of the many EU products (cheese, wine, meats, vegetables, fruit) that we regularly buy that will cost more if we are not part of the EU single market.
If you voted Leave and thought this meant staying in the EU single market, please contact Julian Sturdy, and please, please don’t moan when the cost of living rises.
