CLLR Keith Aspden is right to point to the importance of cross-party unity in opposing closure of Army Barracks in York (Letters, April 3).

While council economic development plans promote a diverse local economy with science, education and business based jobs replacing those declining in manufacturing and rail, the Army is still a significant local employer.

Based in our community, army families attend local schools and spend money in local shops and businesses.

Last week the Green amendment, supported by all parties, stressed the role of the Local Plan in determining future use of Imphal Barracks.

If MoD calculations behind the proposal assume up to 800 houses on the site, this will face challenge from practical constraints such as green belt, heritage and traffic impact, which Green councillors will champion.

It is also important to defend this significant employment site within such a sustainable location which can easily be accessed by public transport, walking and cycling.

As councillor for the ward in which Imphal Barracks sit, I am more than happy to take up concerns of all residents (military or civilian) and work with Cllr Aspden on common concerns created by the proposed closures.

Cllr Andy D’Agorne, Green Party, Fishergate ward, York
