OF course there have been hundreds of positive comments for shipping containers in Piccadilly (The Press, March 27).

Spark:York have done a thorough job orchestrating members and supporters to write in and stress all the economic and social benefits they claim will come with their project.

But whether it be 500 or 5,000 supporters makes no difference to the fact their scheme is entirely inappropriate, out of keeping and in breach of fundamental local and national planning policies. It should be refused accordingly.

Government planning guidance has remained constant for decades on the matter of public consultations. Substantial third party support (or opposition) to a proposal is not in itself sufficient reason to grant (or refuse) planning permission.

This is a planning application and should be determined on planning grounds alone. Not on how many people the applicants have managed to mobilise to endorse their venture.
