TODAY we commence the process for leaving the European Union, thus making March 29 an important milestone in our history once again.

On the same date 556 years ago over the fields of Towton and within sight of the Minster, another great battle was fought for the right to decide who governed the nation.

This was the epicentre of the Wars of the Roses that left an estimated 28,000 dead in a single day, approximately two per cent of the entire male population of England.

Anyone that likes Game of Thrones, has a keen interest in history or simply wants a scenic place to walk the dog should consider paying the site a visit.

Situated a few miles south of Tadcaster on the B1217, the battlefield is sat on a high plain commanding a panoramic view of the countryside for miles around.

The Towton Battlefield Society aims to protect and preserve this piece of our heritage for generations present and future.

Any support people can offer would be most appreciated so do consider visiting this interesting location sometime, it has a fascinating story to tell.
