IT’S nice of Cllr Andrew Waller, City of York Council executive member for the environment, to promise us a day of awareness-raising about the health dangers of air pollution on National Clean Air Day, June 15 (The Press, March 25).
Cllr Waller talks about “the steps that individuals can take” to mitigate the harm caused by dirty air.
Let’s hope his advice will not repeat the calls we’ve seen in recent media reports for parents to keep baby buggies covered in the street, and for schools to keep children indoors at playtime when the pollution monitors reach critical, but will rather seek to address the problem at source.
It’s a pity that Cllr Waller’s Lib Dem group and their Conservative colleagues recently turned down the Labour group’s budget amendment to carry on investing in low-emission vehicles for the Park&Ride bus service.
More low-emission buses would really have given us something to celebrate on Clean Air Day.
