THREE University of York students may well have averted another late night river tragedy by their quick action.

Matthew Sherring-Lucas and his friends Alex Lusty and George Nunn left The Lowther in the early hours of last Wednesday and noticed two women trying to help a man in the river.

They pulled him out and put him in the recovery position until emergency services arrived.

It is wonderful to report on a life being saved rather than lost, as could easily have happened.

Best of all, the students’ behaviour suggests they were alert to the dangers, and that warnings about York’s rivers are getting through to young people.
